Radiation-induced bystander effect in non-irradiated glioblastoma spheroid cells
Radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBEs) are detected in cells that are not irradiated but receive signals from treated cells. The present study explored these bystander effects in a U87MG multicellular tumour spheroid model. A medium transfer technique was employed to induce the bystander effect, and colony formation assay was used to evaluate the effect. Relative changes in expression of B...
متن کاملGenotoxic damage in non-irradiated cells: contribution from the bystander effect.
It has always been accepted dogma that the deleterious effects of ionising radiation such as mutagenesis and carcinogenesis are due mainly to direct damage to DNA. Using the Columbia University charged-particle microbeam and the highly sensitive AL cell mutagenic assay, it is shown here that non-irradiated cells acquire the mutagenic phenotype through direct contact with cells whose nuclei are ...
متن کاملRescue Effects: Irradiated Cells Helped by Unirradiated Bystander Cells
The rescue effect describes the phenomenon where irradiated cells or organisms derive benefits from the feedback signals sent from the bystander unirradiated cells or organisms. An example of the benefit is the mitigation of radiation-induced DNA damages in the irradiated cells. The rescue effect can compromise the efficacy of radioimmunotherapy (RIT) (and actually all radiotherapy). In this pa...
متن کاملBystander responses in low dose irradiated cells treated with plasma from gamma irradiated blood
A number of studies in the field of radiobiology contradict the Linear Non-Threshold model in the low dose range. These observations indicate that there may be more harmful effects for cells exposed to low dose irradiation than would be predicted by extrapolation from high dose data. For the last 20 years a new phenomenon in the area of the radiobiological effects has been described. A radiatio...
متن کاملIsolation of chlamydia in irradiated and non-irradiated McCoy cells.
Specimens from eye and genital tract were cultured in parallel in irradiated and non-irradiated McCoy cells and the frequency of isolation of chlamydia using these culture methods was compared. There was a significant difference between the frequencies of isolation; irradiated McCoy cells produced a greater number of positive results.
